How are your hiking shoes holding up? Catherine insists we should take an extra pair but I dont know where we might fit them! What say you?

Vicki is wearing a Lowa low hiking boot, and I am wearing Keen Targhee mid hiking boot. We are half way through the Camino, and plenty of wear left. We both bought one size up in length and width. We also brought toe sleeves to prevent blisters, or cushion sensitive toes.

Your pack, water, and any snack (fruit or nuts for us) ideally should weigh less than 10% of your body weight. An extra pair of hiking shoes or boots would add to your weight.

Personally, we would recommend one pair of good hiking boots with an extra pair of insoles.
I replaced the insoles that came with my boots with a thicker pair designed for extra metatarsal support.

Toe sleeves as needed, body glide foot balm or Vaseline,a pair of thin liner socks and a pair of wool socks are what we use.

Have not heard of anyone bringing two pair of boots. Hiking shoes or boots, and one pair of hiking sandals or flip flops are the usual. Considering you are starting in October, flip flops might not be appropriate for after hiking.
This is Vicki- Maybe for Catherine a light weight hard sole yoga type shoe, would be a good choice.

If your boots wear out, you could always replace them in one of the major cities (Burgos or Leon).

Many perigrinos after a few days of hiking are mailing items home. The mantra being if you think you might need it, you probably don’t. Michael, a policeman from Holland whom we met, sent 25 pounds of his heavy military/police hiking gear home, and replaced it with lightweight gear.

    Buen Camino
